چکیده

Less than a decade after the founding of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the noted American physician Oliver Wendell Holmes, addressing the Massachusetts Medical Society in 1860, made his oft-quoted statement that " ...if the whole materia medica, as now used, could be sunk to the bottom of the sea, it would be all the better for mankind-and all the worse for the fishes. " 1 The pharmaceutical armamentarium of the middle of the 19 th century was not quite so useless as the skeptic Holmes suggested. Even he qualified his condemnation by admitting that there were exceptions to his generalization, such as opium. Yet it is a striking fact that the drug therapy of the period around 1850 was in many ways more similar to that of antiquity and the Middle Ages than is is to that of the early 21 st century. As historian Charles Rosenberg has noted: " Medical therapeutics changed remarkably little in the two millennia preceding 1800. " 2 This point can be illustrated by comparing the drug therapy of today to that of the middle of the nineteenth century. A useful starting point is an examination of a list of the ten most prescribed drugs of the year 2000 in the United States and their therapeutic uses (Table I).

Characterization of Salmonellae isolated from different animal and human sources by PCR and resistance trends

Salmonella is one of the most important zoonotic pathogens with many virulence factors playing a major role in its pathogenesis. The aims of this study were to detect spvA, int2 and invC virulence genes of different Salmonella serotypes isolated from various clinical animal and human sources, and to investigate antibiotic resistance patterns among these serotypes. Using a PCR assay, a total of ...

Estimation of Genetic Parameters and Genetic Trends of Somatic Cell Score in Iranian Holstein Cows Using Test-Day Records

The aim of the present study was to estimate the genetic parameters and genetic trends of somatic cell score (SCS) in the first 3 lactations of Iranian Holstein cows by random regression (RR) animal model by using Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) method. The data set used in this analysis included observations of 340318 test-day records of 41526 cows in 288 herds; 89969 test-day of 11750 co...

Effects of Lactic Fermentation by Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum on Antioxidant Characteristics and Lipase and Lipoxygenase Activities of Wheat Germs

Background and Objectives: Wheat germ is the most nutritious part of wheat grains, which has a short shelf-life due to its high lipid contents and presence of lipase and lipoxygenase enzymes. Thus, wheat germs are separated from the whole wheat grains during the flouring process, mostly used as animal foods. The objective of this study was to investigate effects of fermentation by Lactobacillus...
